November 2015

Fall is in the air at Thoreau! I would like to recognize Mr. Lemaire for coordinating 3 fantastic productions of Monster Madness! Given the spectacular performances at each show, it is clear that a tremendous amount of work and adult support went into each student’s performance. Warm thanks to Mrs. Hoyt, Mr. Hourihan, Ms. Foggo, Mrs. Swain and the many parent volunteers for all of their support! This month, our whole school assembly focused on one component of our school’s positive behavioral intervention and support system: “The Thoreau School 3 Be’s”. At Thoreau our 3 Be’s are: Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe. In addition to reviewing what the 3 Be’s stand for, Mrs. Burns’s 4th grade class performed several skits demonstrating the 3Be’s in action. Students “caught” being respectful, responsible, and/or safe will receive a small certificate and will be recognized on the 3 Be’s bulletin board outside the cafeteria. Thank you to Rachel Levesque for developing this wonderful program!

Best,

Mrs. Charles

Absence Line

In the event that your child will be absent or tardy please be sure to call our absence line at 978-341-2490, Ext. 3690 and indicate the reason for any absence. Thank you!*

From Nurse Jensen

Please consider sending in an extra set of clothes for your child to keep in his or her locker. More often than you might suspect, students in grades 1-5 need a change of clothing due to anything from a bloody noses to art projects. If you happen to be cleaning out your closets and have extra tops and bottoms in a range of sizes, please donate them to the health office! *If you have questions about our Sick Day Guidelines or any other health-related policies, please visit the Health Office’s web page at http://thoreau.colonial.net/Teachers/Nurse/.

Friendly Reminders

We continue to have several calls to the main office for very last minute changes to dismissal plans. Please make every effort to call the school before 2:45 PM. Thank you!

If your student rides a bicycle or scooter to and from school, please be sure he or she arrives home on the ride-on that belongs to him or her. There were some mix-ups last week.

Please stop by the Lost and Found to claim your missing items.

A Kid in Every Park

Under President Obama’s Every Kid in a Park initiative, fourth-grade students nationwide may visit a website to obtain a pass for free access to all federal lands and waters. The pass is valid for the 2015-16 school year and grants entry for the student and three accompanying adults (or an entire car, for drive-in parks) at more than 2,000 national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and marine sanctuaries. The website also offers educators and parents activities, trip planning books, safety and packing tips, and other helpful links.

Coats for Kids

The Concord Middle School Coats for Kids Club needs your help. Their annual Anton’s Cleaners Coats for Kids drive is underway! Please consider donating any gently-used coats for the needy this winter by sending them to school with your child. The drop off box is by the office. We accept any size coat, from infant snowsuits to oversized adult, but please do not donate clothing other than winter coats – no scarves, hats, gloves, mittens or snow pants. The drive runs until January 8th, 2016. If you receive a new coat for the winter consider donating your old coat to Coats for Kids. Thank you very much for your generosity!
