What a great day we had on Wednesday, coming together as a community for our annual Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day! It was wonderful to see so many Huskies and families enjoying the crisp fall morning and starting the day together.

October is flying by, and our campus is looking so colorful and vibrant! It’s a special time of year at Thoreau, and I’m grateful for all the ways our families and staff help make our school community such a wonderful place to learn and grow.

In the coming days, you’ll receive an invitation from Superintendent Hunter to complete our family survey. I hope you’ll consider taking a few minutes to share your feedback. Your perspectives matter! This is data that my team and I review carefully and use to reflect on our work, celebrate what’s going well, and identify opportunities to improve both at Thoreau and across the district. Our goal this year is to reach a 50% family participation rate, and we’d love your help getting there!

Thank you for your continued partnership and for all you do to make Thoreau such a special place.

It was great to have so many families join us for Back to School Night. There is something powerful about having our school community together, and we really do have a special partnership between our students, families, and staff. Thank you for making the evening such a wonderful reflection of that partnership.

As we turn the page to a new month, fall is certainly in the air. The school year is rolling forward, routines are taking shape, and our classrooms are full of learning, laughter, and discovery. As Henry David Thoreau wrote, “An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.” In many ways, this new month feels like another opportunity to begin with intention, embrace the season, and continue the journey together.

It was another busy week at Thoreau! We had a successful Picture Day and bus evacuation drill, and it was great to join the Thoreau PTG for a new family coffee hour. In fourth grade, our Blanding’s turtles arrived on Thursday, while our STEAM Lab field trips and a kindergarten apple-picking field trip gave students some great opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. Monster Madness rehearsals have also been underway, and we can’t wait to see our performers take the stage!

The year is officially in full swing, and fall was certainly in the air this week!

What a great full week at Thoreau! With beautiful weather, our schedules and routines beginning to feel more familiar, and so much happening across our building and campus, it has been wonderful to see our Huskies settling into the school year.

We held our first All-School Meeting of the year, and it was the perfect way to celebrate the “C” in CARES: Community. We welcomed students together with greetings, activities, and our school song, and were reminded just how special it is to have our entire Husky Pack together.

We were especially excited to welcome students from CCHS who are helping with the upcoming Kicks for Cancer event. Not only did they do an amazing job sharing their work and explaining why this event is so meaningful, but they were also Thoreau alumni! Watching these high schoolers connect with our younger students was such a wonderful example of community in action.

As we begin this year together, I hope our students continue to see themselves as an important part of our Thoreau community. Every voice matters, every person matters, and we all have a role to play in making our school a place where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and valued.

It’s week two and we’re picking up momentum!

Academics are in full swing, classroom routines are becoming more familiar, and, perhaps most importantly, relationships are being built and strengthened each day. It’s been wonderful to see our students settling in, finding their footing, and beginning to feel at home in their classrooms and throughout Thoreau.

Next week, we’ll come together as an entire school community for our first All-School Meeting of the year! These gatherings are one of my favorite Thoreau traditions and a special opportunity for us to celebrate, share, participate in activities and greetings, learn from one another, and continue building the culture and sense of community that make Thoreau such a special place.

We’re off to a great start, and I’m excited for all that’s ahead!

We’ve had a really positive first week back at Thoreau! There’s always a special energy that comes with the start of a new school year, and it’s been wonderful to see our students settling in, building new relationships, and reconnecting with friends and teachers.

This year, we’re navigating a few additional changes to our learning spaces. Some teachers are teaching from carts, others are working from different locations around the building, and one of our classes is getting settled into our new modular classroom. While it may not be the start to the year we originally envisioned, our staff have embraced the changes with flexibility, creativity, and a true spirit of teamwork. Most importantly, our students are happy, learning, and making the most of their new spaces and routines.

We also had our first fire drill of the year on Wednesday, and it went very well. It was another opportunity for students and staff to practice our routines and become more comfortable with the changes to our campus.

As we begin this new year together, I’m especially grateful for the partnership and support. We’re overwhelmed by the generosity of our PTG and Thoreau families. From donating supplies and snacks to volunteering their time and finding countless ways to support teachers and students, our families have once again shown what it means to be part of a strong community. These gestures make a huge difference and we’re so grateful.
