Thoreau Elementary School Health Care Philosophy

Effective management of health care needs requires a partnership among the student, the parent(s) or guardian(s), the primary care provider, and the adults who work with the student at school. The school nurse works closely with all disciplines to coordinate the resources of school, home, and community as they pertain to the health of individual students.

The school nurse has the responsibility to provide emergency care, health maintenance, and health guidance for the students and staff.

The school’s responsibility for the administration of emergency care is primarily limited to first aid only. First aid is defined as the immediate and temporary care given in order to prevent further injury until medical care may be secured. All medical treatment is considered outside the province of school responsibility. Transportation, except for emergencies, is the responsibility of the parent or guardian. If you are unavailable by phone during the day, it is essential that the school have current emergency numbers on the Student Health and Emergency Information Form that is filled out the beginning of each school year. This form is available at the Health Office or on the School Health Forms page. Transportation for a sick child must be available.

The school nurse staffs the Health Office during regular school hours. The school nurse is available to discuss health concerns with parents by phone at 978-341-2490 x3158, or by appointment.
