Welcome to Kindergarten at Thoreau School!

Parent/teacher communication is such an important part of your child’s education.  Here are several ways to reach me:

Important First Day Information

• On the first day of school some Thoreau staff members will be outside to help your child find our classroom. Please be assured that you do not need to accompany your child inside. In fact, we have found from past experience that children make the transition more easily from home to school if parents say “goodbye” outside.
• Please help your child to wear his/her name tag for the first full week of school. After that time, I will collect the name tags to keep in school for other occasions.
• Please send a healthy snack and drink to school daily with your child. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday please send lunch or plan for your child to buy lunch at school (you will be given information from food services or you can always send in a check to be deposited into your child’s account). On long days I also give the children an opportunity to eat a snack in the afternoon. Usually they just finish something from morning snack or lunch.
• Please send in an extra (season appropriate ) set of clothes for you child to keep in his/her cubby (don't forget socks!! )
• Please be sure to put your child’s name on all of his/her belongings.
• We are very careful about making sure the children get to the correct after-school destination. If you need to change your child’s normal going-home arrangements for any reason, be sure to send a note or call the office directly. It is school policy that I only release your child to leave school with persons specifically designated by you and that I only change the established going-home routine at your request.
• On full days we have quiet time.  If you would like to send in a small blanket or towel or child size sleeping bag, you may do so.  I will send it home on a regular basis for it to be washed and returned to school. 
• On most Friday's, I will send home your child's "Friday Bag" that will have some of their classroom work in it.  Please return it to school on Monday.

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are full days for Kindergarten and Tuesdays are always half days. Thursdays are normally half days but on some Thursday afternoons, children will be invited to participate in small group activities and will stay for a full day.
